Athens Air Show

Post by Andyph » Thu Dec 19, 2024 8:10 pm

Thinking of going to this..
Really to see the F-4s and M2000s. Just checking with those who are more up with the play that F-4s are still likely to be around - haven't retired by September?
thanks

To save others looking, it is on 06/07 September at Tanagra.

Been to the last four shows, always seen 3 Phantoms but first 2 years 2 were flying only, however last year and this the 2 flyers were on the ground and taxied past the crowd line.Don't expect more than 3 active Mirage 2000's but plenty more stored in full view.

There were only the two flying in 2022, no static example.

It can be quite warm but nothing too unbearable.

For the actual show days, there is usually a modestly priced upgrade for a shaded area on the crowdline. Not sure about what the Spotters package offers shade wise though they do get a small FRIAT style Grandstand. Even taking the M2000s and F-4s away, it is a worthy event to visit simply for the Hellenic military aircraft that rarely leave their homeland and occasionally some decent US Navy/US Marine Corps participation if a ship is in the area.

Thanks for the replies gents- Might have a go at the seat and shade option - has anyone seen what that is like?
And any advice on where to stay? Train from central Athens?

Andy hi,
I am going to the AFW the last 8 years, in most of them a static Phantom was there and also a short flight display, last year there were 2 Phantoms that took off and landed with a flying display, I hope this year will have a similar program as their active service life goes to an end soon.
As you most probably know, Seprember in Greece is a worm month with temperatures at 30-35, so the Seat & Shadow area is the most appropriate (check https://www.athensflyingweek.gr/event-i ... bbc58-7f8e), currently Seat & Shadow is priced at 50 euros, also there is a transportation service from a Metro station in Athens to Tanagra AFB (check https://www.athensflyingweek.gr/event-i ... 4a038-882b), I recommend it as the best way to go.
The seats are all in front of the taxing runway, therefore you get a good view and photos of the taxing aircrafts as well the runway for take offs and landings.
All the best,
Spiros

Andy hi,
I am not sure of the bus service on Thursday and Friday, I guess if you email them they will reply with info.
Have in mind that on Thursday and Friday only the Grandstand is available.

Spiros - thanks for the useful information.

One question please: the "seat and shadow" area looks like all seats are at ground level, so presumably not much good for photography? Presumably the grandstand is better if you're happy to deal with the sun/heat?

Hi Paul,
Absolutely, Seat & Shadow is ground level, while the Grandstand is elevated and better for photography from higher level.

Well, a "deafening fly-by" rather than a display ;)

Just wondering if anyone has any experience from outside the base on Thursday/Friday - looks like there are a few places to view from..

You can go at the hill near the west end of the runway.

Is that the small hill next to the railway or the larger hill at the quarry? Quite a few places around the base to spot from but I imagine it’s the usual “not advised”, regardless of airshow week.
