With reference to the incident at Brize Norton. Am l right in thinking it couldn’t have happened at a USAF.Base Because they have notices which state that unauthorised entry may be met by lethal force, plus most bases have armed guards on 24 hour duty.

The issue is having 5ft fences and only 4 guards to patrol the 8 miles of said fence. Todays article in the Telegraph below highlights that fact.

I work in the security flight at Marham and it’s a problem we’ve highlighted for years. The guards at Brize weren’t sleeping I do know.

It was interesting to note that when the RAF were in residence at Wattisham the perimeter fence was wooden post and rail about 4 feet high. When the Army moved in a new fence probably 8 feet high with razor wire was quickly installed throughout.

I remember my first visit to Wattisham, I was about 8 years old and when I had my photo taken next to the Lightning gate guard, security was prompt and told us off to be fair i was dangerous looking at 8 fair play to them they let us take the photo

Practically all Army camps have high fences, admittedly that is a throw back to the IRA threat.

Spotting outside Volkel in the early 80s a small group of us ended up in the guardroom as the MPs were fed up telling us not to sit on the fence. Not nice having an mg pointed at you even if the MP was smiling.

To continue the nostalgic 'musings' , in the 50's at Burtonwood [USAF] us spotters could cross the main taxiway on our bikes at a signal control , and continue within the airfield on a road that accessed a base housing site until we came to a low wooden barrier alongside the crash station about 100yds (if that) from the main runway ! We were literally on the airfield . The MP's frequently visited us often letting us sit in their Jeeps . To have to stop at the taxiway barrier whilst a C124 , WB50 , C119 , C47 etc lumbered past was magical . Those really were the days . Ah the memories . At least Fairford is still 'doing it 'for me on my occasional visits .

It would be an interesting legal dilemma should a US serviceperson shoot an unarmed civilian dead, irrespective of where they are or what they are doing, that's for sure. I'd expect we'd have another Anne Sacoolas situation quick-sharp.

I know l started particular thread, in the early 1960s l lived in Freckleton about a mile from runway 08 - 26 there was a wire fence with two lines of wire about three feet high it went the entire length of the runway about 100 yards from the active part was a pile of chipping where we spotters use to wave to the Test Pilots one in particular Keith Hartley Tarnish 7 always acknowledged our presence and perform some spectacular vertical rotations. I was a member of AvroLancashire and Keith use to regale us with fantastic stories of his flying career. Our Chairman was a former Puma Pilot who also regaled us with naval stories involving Submarines. But lol digress
