Nickel 115, F-14A Tomcat 161297

Post by jonf45 » Sat Jul 12, 2025 1:33 pm

Hi,

Recently finished this Hasegawa Grumman F-14A Tomcat,  finished as 161297/AB115 of VF-211 "Checkmates", USS Enterprise circa 2004, so looking a little weather worn as nearing the end of its life.....

Airbrushed using Valejo Model Air Acrylics (as these seemed to give better definition between the 3 greys compared to Mr Color and Tamiya in my tests) in Tactical Paint Scheme livery, and completed using VF-Decals replacement decals and Galaxy Tools Pitot Tube.

Weathered using Flory washes.

There were some fit issues with the kit, the major problems around the join of the front and rear fuselage parts, and also the canopy, which not only didnt fit particular well width ways, but was also scratched 😭

The wings were a bit of a nightmare and i probably should have just done them with spoilers in etc, but you live and learn!!

I have a Tamiya one to do next and so will be interesting to see the difference!!

The Hase Tomcat doesnt come with any weapons, so i may grab some out of the Tamiya and add to this one.

You have to choose between wings open or closed, and even though i prefer the look of them open, it may have been a bad choice as it will make it much harder to display as its huge 🤣

Whatever issues you had with the fit of certain parts doesn’t (from what I can see at least!) detract from the end result. This looks really good, the weathered finish in particular is excellent.

You are in for an absolute treat when you build the Tamiya kit, the fit and engineering is second to none.
