Reading between the lines it seems like the Arab League are arguing that they were only ever interested in having a no-fly zone. They seem to fail to understand that the imposition of an effective no-fly zone is dependent on the neutralisation of Libyan integrated air-defense systems.

Well the fact the Arab league "voted" to impose a no fly zone, but didnt do it themselves should tell you all you needed to know. Have a look at what air assets the Arab League countries have, believe me they wouldnt need our help. Instead they would rather drag us (the coalition) into the messy stuff. Lets be honest,Why did China, Russia and India choose to sit it out? because they want business contracts with Libya. I notice the taliban have ventured out of their cave to release a statement calling for all muslims to take arms against the evil west.....same :grr: different day....

To be fair it may sound racist but it isnt the whole region is going down the plug hole.

Anyone else thinking that the Italian tugboat and crew which has been captured is some sort of plan that gaddafi has laid out.

Great comments just made by an Al Jazerra reporter..."what were the Arab league thinking? Did they think these radar sites man themselves? Of course there would be some casualties. And why did Russia abstain instead of veto? They would know what was coming next."

Also a comment about the casualties shown on libyan state tv "if these were the casualties of a missile strike, why are the only injuries a broken leg, or head cuts?"

Couldn't agree more

The Arab League 'going wobbly' is no great surprise. It could be a case of having to accommodate many different views. Given the substantial anti-western elements it encompasses, the leaders may believe they have to tread a difficult path in not being seen as too pro-western while at the same time enlisting the help of those same nations. It is an ancient culture, but one where loyalties have been known to shift rapidly in the past and I'm sure we will see many more twists and turns before this particular scenario is played out.

It is a bit late to put the toothpaste back in the tube now, and extremely naive of them to believe a no-fly zone could be as 'clean' as they now give the impression they expected it to be - but I suspect they are having to pander to many different factions in their own membership.

That's pretty spot on analysis I'd say. It's a complex situation no-doubt.

Grateful if weapons loads are not publicised. It's a small point but maybe important?
