RAF Wyton

Post by bigjohn » Sun Jan 22, 2012 8:05 pm

Hi All

Can anyone remember, or have photo's of, Runway 09 end of RAF Wyton.

Did there use to be traffic control lights to stop the road traffic and was there ever a crash barrier across that end of the runway?

There is no sign of it now but I remember these being there in the early 90's before the Canberra's went

Regards

Big John

Hi bigjohn,
I took some video of Canberra's at the 09 end and there was certainly a barrier there -- an RAF TypeB. As
for the traffic lights, I vaguely remember them.

cheers,
Graham

hi,i remember going past just after 100 squadron canberra C-F hit the barrier at that end after over-running the runway thus causing its demise.also whilst i worked on the grass cutting gang on wyton i watched an italian airforce piaggio aircraft taxied all the way to the end of the runway 09 before he realised he was behind the barrier and had to make a quick about face and taxy back round to the other side of it.the traffic lights were also used when the nimrod r1,s would take off from runway 27 so as not to scare the car drivers going past the cossroads.

Hi, the airfield was deactivated in April 95 when 51sqn Nimrod's moved to Waddo. All the Canberra units had been disbanded by then or had moved to Marham in the case of 39 (1 PRU) Sqn. 100 sqn had converted to Hawk T1 and were long gone by then. Wyton was reactivated again in 99 when the Tutor flying commenced.
Previous to about 1991, there was no roundabout at 09 end and the A141 turn was a little further up and right on the edge of the threshold. The canberra that hit the barrier continued so far that it's front end was through the fence and almost poking on to the road. The barrier, which was like a huge tennis net, did it's job for sure !

Hi All

Great to get all this info, it was for no reason other than pure curiosity. Does anyone have any pictures ?

A removal lorry drove up to the Guardroom in 1976(?) to report a collision with an a/c. Orderly Sergeant asked where and was shown Canberra tyre marks on the van's roof. The removal lorry had jumped the red light and had a lucky escape for both lorry & a/c.

Nice story 22a, with a username and pic like that you must be or have been a railwayman in your time, I was at 31a for many years as a guard.

Happy Days
