Yaesu VR-500 Software

Post by LincsVRS » Thu Jun 21, 2012 9:11 pm

Hi Folks,

I don't know if I am in the right catagory here but does anyone have any software to program the Yaesu VR-500? I have bought a USB cable off ebay and I have tried using the tk500 software that is open licence but it just wont run on the computer for some unknown reason, no errors, just wont run! Has anyone managed to get any software working with this model? I am getting rather frustrated as I need to be out next week on the run up to Waddington Airshow and this scanner is one of the more difficult to program in huge batches and is in desperate need of a reorganisation. I would be happy to receive a zip file from a trust forum member with software to offer.

Oh and hello, I am a noob! Well, new here. Spent the last 10 or so years living on the housing estate near to the WAVE at RAF Waddington, I'm a keen photographer (All the gear but no idea) and have spent a lot of time at Waddington and had a few trips to places like RAF Valley and Civ Airports.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated and will put a halt to hours of frustration!

Thanks in advance

The only alternative I know to tk500 can be found here (but it 'aint cheap!):

Getting back to tk500, are you having trouble running tcl832.exe? This installation file dates back several years and will only run on 32-bit operating systems (it won't run on my Windows 7 64-bit system). To get tk500 working, forget the tcl832.exe file and download this: http://bit.ly/MSvJMU. This is a zip file I've put on my web server containing the files you need. Unzip the file and place both the 'tcl' and 'tk500' folders in the root of your C drive. To use tk500, just open the tk500 folder and double click on 'tk500.bat'. This will open 4 separate windows. Each window is used to program separate settings in the vr500 scanner.

If you get tk500 running, let me know if you need any further help using it. It's not very intuitive and can be a bit hit and miss!

Yaesu VR-500 Software

Post by LincsVRS » Sun Jul 08, 2012 11:02 pm

I've actually tried both the tk500 and ADMS3 and can get neither working. Im struggling to remember which one didn't even run, I think it was tk500. I am using a USB to YEASU cable I bought of eBay which came with device driver software. I installed it on a Windows XP machine to avoid any problems with windows 7 or 64bit OS. Now windows says the device is functioning fine, but to be fair I have no way of knowing its working as I don't have a "known working" pc setup or scanner.

It has been a while since I tried to get it all working (the day of my original post) as its running on a computer downstairs and I have lots of health problems that mean I spend most of my life in bed and tend to only go out on special occasions using high volumes of morphine which I pay the price for afterwards! Anyway I digress however my point is I have not had time to return back to it yet, I hope this will change at some point this week.

Tk500 would not even run, I've used the patch to bring it up to the correct version and have installed the software to the specific locations the site tells me to do. I have tried running it in compatibility mode with varied settings with no joy. It launches a command prompt window for the briefest of milliseconds however I can only just detect this with the human eye let alone read anything in the box. When I return I will take it all off and try again with your link as I really do appreciate our posting it.

With ADMS3 I managed to get it installed fine, however I noticed that my computer has assigned the cable to COM13 and ADMS only supports COM 1 to 9 (I think). So I then swapped something else over to COM13 and moved the cable to a supported COM number and tried again. But no joy, I select receive mode on the program and boot the scanner, select the send function and a few seconds it comes up with the error "Scanner says no!" (or rather a version of that error which I can't remember, but you get the idea) Again I've tried several changes with Joy.

I got part the way in creating a windows 98 virtual machine on a PC so I could test it in a pure win98 environment but I only got round to installing the OS and didn't get round to seeing if the virtual machine can access the hosts USB ports as if it could I was going to test both bits of software on a variety of win95/win98/win98SE environments.

So to summarise, I'm going to try tk500 from your link, then virtual machines, then maybe a hammer and some duck tape? However I will still have the niggle of not knowing for sure if the cable from eBay functions properly............. Thanks once again and I will keep you updated!
