Vulcan test pilot - book

Post by C24 » Wed Aug 22, 2012 5:20 am

I missed the flight over Cottesmore last w/e but found this book in a National Trust bookshop yesterday.

Author, Tony Blackman who flew the prototype and 105 of the 136 built. Bounty books, of Octopus books, uk. ISBN:978-0-753719-15-2.

I couldn't see a post but don't shoot me if it is common knowledge. :D

I agree, a great read.

I have just put "Poynton" into Google earth and moved to the west looking for the Avro factory site. On my version, the airfield shows a Mk2 Vulcan and a Nimrod parked to the north of 07/25.

Are they still in place?

C24,

The Vulcan is XM603, which has been on site for many years and is now so dangerously corroded that no-one is allowed anywhere near it, despite sterling preservation efforts over the years by a few volunteers. It's been a candidate for scrapping for many years, although I don't believe that has actually happened yet.

Forward thinking by the BAES management to allow such a piece of history to die on the site where all Vulcans were born...Idiots... :grr: :grr: :grr:

Thanks for the info.

The lack of lateral thinking amazes me - why didn't BAE offer it to the Vulcan trust years ago when at least something useful could have been salvaged.

:S In positive manner however, I would cheerfully follow all the leaders of this country over a cliff. Just a smallish one of course!

Jem60,

Nope, "Vulcan test pilot" is the title. Certainly I will need to read it more than once to fully appreciate the content. I will look out for the 4xT one that you mention.

The Nimrod mentioned up the thread is long gone.

A few paragraphs in this book by Jim Watts-Phillips, who went on to be chief test pilot at ETPS, and I'm proud to say is my father-in-law :)
