Brawdy - Assorted

Post by Rerun57 » Mon Oct 15, 2012 10:28 am

A few more from Brawdy, most from the 1980s.

Apologies for quality - some are cropped scans form more distant views!

Transall at Brawdy Airday, late 1980s??. This was after the GAF stopped regular trooping flights to Brawdy - I think!

Canadian Armed Forces T-33, 1980s, - CAF F-104s were regular visitors to Brawdy - usually for amazing beat ups of the airfield - I think that these were "maintenance check flights" from Warton - BAE had the maintenance contract. Callsigns were usually "Tiger". I stand to be corrected!

Happy days. The NAF Mildenhall C-131s were regularly seen over the Vale of Evesham routing Mildenhall-Brawdy and the C-117s, C-1A Traders and C-45s in earlier years. The C-1A Trader made a fabulous sound with its Wright Cyclone radial engines clattering away. The C-45s were painted in a very attractive Red & White colour scheme.

These next few shots were taken one winter evening in 1992. The pictures are on rather grainy high speed Ektachrome, so once again apologies!

The days of Brawdy were numbered when I took these....

A resident....

....but you never knew what might turn up in the circuit......

Image
Buccaneer and Tower strip 92 (1280x356) by Rerun57, on Flickr

.....probably just popped in off the range. I suppose many pilots came back to see where they had trained!

Then, just as your flask of hot coffee has run out, you've eaten the last pasty and the radio begins to go quiet....... getting dark...

Brawdy was a fab airfield .... in its hey day the busiest airfield I can remember visiting. To see eight aircraft in the circuit was not uncommon.

I will keep digging.....

Ah, the Hunters bring back so many memories of my childhood, watching them chase each other round the Devon countryside near my home.....that blue-note still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and gives me goosebumps....!

I like all of these, particularly the Hunter with the chute deployed.

I've just stumbled into this one via a google search and it's great to see my old place again

Spent many a happy year down there working on the classics as depicted and especially the wide range of visitors we had as part of our daily / weekly chores on VASF.... (delete whichever applied dependeing on the weather...lol)

Great shots, whose Mustang is that parked up by the tower in one of the Buccaneer shots?

Not sure about the Mustang, but it seemed to pop in to Brawdy a few times and alos took part in at least one of the airshows, I think.

Thanks for the comments all.

I've asked the question to one of our ex-Brawdy pilots who I'm in contact with to see what he knows about that Mustang as we did have some airshow display pilots amongst the based crews....

Right, I've had a response of sorts...

The only pilot we can pin this Mustang down to is Pete John who was a TWU instructor on 79 Sqn at Brawdy for some time as well as being an airshow display pilot for aircraft owned by Robs Lamplough including a Luftwaffe marked Pilatus P2 G-PTWO/RF+16 and Mustang G-BIXL which is these days better known as "Miss Helen". The red nose in the photo is the only hurdle in this snippet of info, as I can't seem to find a photo showing a red nose on G-BIXL - just blue?????

On a side note - Pete John gave me a flight in that Pilatus P2 that I'll never forget.... :D

Edit: My pilot colleague thinks the red on the photo may have been an engine cover not the paint scheme?

Thanks for trying to find out which Mustang it was. I have been thinking it could be Spencer Flacks 'Sunny VII' that had a red nose at the time. Miss Helen was in Memphis Belle colours at the time I believe so that rules that one out.
