Stafford ops 278.175 air/ground, the HLS is to the left of the main gate but behind a few buildings used quite alot at night but has lean periods, as stated above, 242.250 is a A/A freq used by various helos, all 3 services have been noted at the site for refuel, hope this helps,

Re: mod stafford
The RAF Museum Reserve Collection is also located there, and my God it's amazing! I was like a kid in a massive aviation related candy shop.

Re: mod stafford
Hmm, don't recall seeing any, but it was a couple of years back. Mind I was too busy wetting myself about the whacking great chunks of Stirling fuselage....[drooool]

Re: mod stafford
The Jindiviks were present only for a short time - but not at MOD Stafford. They were with a private 'holding' company which used one of the old supply sites next to the Police station. I was fortunate to gain access and logged about a dozen - some of which had never flown. Unfortunately permission for photos was not granted - and I think they were scrapped somewhere near Tamworth soon after.jindivik wrote:Hi Steve

I think the examples that never flew were part of the 900 series, shame really as i watched them out of Llanbedr for over 40 years until closure in 2004

Re: mod stafford
You will probably find out it has something to do with TSW (Tactical Support Wing) being there. Aircrews getting hands-on hot refuelling training.phatbob74 wrote:New here but have lived in Stafford since 1992. RAF/MOD Stafford has always intrigued me - not least as its so big but yet has no runway! Recently (probably in the last 6 months) we've seen a lot more interesting helis than the usual Air Ambulance and Police overhead - Chinooks seem more frequent and I was amazed to see an Apache fly low overhead a couple of weeks ago!
Is there any particular reason for this increased activity?
Ps, I'd love to see those photos and also hear a bit more about the base history - sadly Wikipedia has nothing to say on it...

Re: mod stafford
Thought i would rekindle the post! I have lived in Stafford for 30 years and have seen many movements go in and out of Stafford including the Jollys! I have many images of recent movements from TSW including Apaches, Lynx, Pumas, Chinooks, Griffins and my brother has Merlins which i have not.......The HLS is a difficult place to tog as the guys that refuel the helis get a little nervous but yet some just get on with the job, we have been questioned many times about the reason we tog the location. I shall put some images up if people are interested?
