Falklands '84 Updated 31.3.15

Post by TAFFEVANS » Sat Nov 16, 2013 8:29 am

Whilst serving as an Airman I spent 4 months down the Falklands (March-July '84) working in HeliOps. Not that many opportunities for photography with 12hr shifts and 1 day off every week. Enjoyable experience though. As I was leaving they were cutting the first 'turf at Mount Pleasant!

HeliOps used to take the C-130 crews on R&R to Lively Island - so pay back time! Difficult to concentrate as the hose kept moving sideways as the F-4/C-130 kept moving backwards and forwards!

Very interesting set of pics. Always good to see operations from the Falklands.
I like the shot of the C130 refuelling from the tanker showing a spray of excess fuel from the disconnection.
Thanks for taking the time to post these :thumb:

Seeing those Phantoms takes me back to '83 when I was at Navy Point opposite Stanley. At one point the powers to be, the top brass in Stanley got fed up with us not saluting officers out in the field (something we do not do on operations) so demanded that we start saluting. At the time we was digging in a water pipe line from Navy Point to Moody Brook, the route of it is in the general orientation of the runway at the airfield, so every Harrier and Phantom taking off would pass us quite close as it climbs away. Anyone on sighting an aircraft would scream out "Officer Approaching", at which everyone would drop tools. spring to attention, and salute. God knows what the pilots thought as they flew past a platoon of Marines and Irish Rangers, strung out in a line saluting them as they fly past.

Great shots of some very interesting subjects. Has to be the Phantoms for me though! I don't know why, but always fancied taking the trip down there!

Steve.
