Hellenic F-4E AUP Phantom **FINISHED**

Post by Thunder » Mon May 24, 2010 10:00 pm

Hi all,

Well with the T-2 Buckeye on hold for the meantime, I've decided to go ahead with the F-4E "Toom"

The base kit for this one is Hasegawa's F-4E "30th Anniversary" boxing. It will be complemented by the following

Aires, F-4E Cockpit ( upgraded to AUP standard)
Aires, F-4E Exhausts
DMold, F-4E Intakes
Paragon, F-4E Inboard Extended Flaps
Isracast, Rafale Litening Pod
Verlinden, F-4E High Detail Set

It will be finished in the "Ghost " scheme of the Hellenic Air Force, keeping up with my Greek fetish  so should look something like this when done.

Sorry no info on copyrights

Will get the Aires sets ordered tomorrow then things will be good to go.

Righty o folks, everything has now arrived so the build will commence this week.

The base kit Hasegawa's "30th Anniversary" F-4E Phantom

To be supplemented with the following goodies

Aires F-4E Cockpit, Aires F-4E Exhausts and DMolds Intakes

Image

Isracast Litening Pod, Paragon Inboard Slats, F-18F etch details (to update the cockpit to AUP satndard)

Image

Verlindens F-4E Super Detail Set

Not sure if I will need the Aires cockpit as the Verlinden set and F-18F etch should do a good enough job, will know better when I start.

I really must check my references better before I order stuff  After checking everything today and getting a feel for the build I noticed that the Verlinden open bays in the Starboard side won't fit in with the Aires Cockpit as there just isn't the room for both. It was then that I also remembered that the radar in the F-4E AUP a/c is completely different to the Verlinden one which is of the older original type. So in the end I have decided not to use the Verlinden set.

Started the build tonight  Not the greatest progress, but since I haven't had any styrene in my hands for nearly 6 weeks it will take a couple of nights to get back up to speed. However I spent tonight chopping, cutting and shutting the Aires cockpit to get it to resemble a AUP a/c pretty pleased with the result so far. Will get the Cockpit, IP's and Ejection seats sprayed up tomorrow night and get some pics up.

Not to sure on the exact serial No but it will be in the batch 0xxxx, as it was this batch only that are/were equipped with the DAIS system. All DAIS equipped a/c have the Intake fairings, along with the one on the fin tip and another one on the gun fairing under the nose.

Things have been a bit a slow with this build so far, what with work and the World Cup. However the Cockpit is 90% finished along with the Ejection seats

That looks sweet Scott!

I know what bar I'm aiming for with my Aires Strike Eagle pit now - going to be tough to equal this! :O :thumb:

Just small updates on this build so far. Have spent the last couple of nights thinning down the cockpit sides in order to get the Aires Cockpit to fit in between the fuselage halves. The Phantom cockpits seem to be the worst fitting of the Aires sets but with a little patience you get there

I have decided to go with the Gun bay open and one open panel on the Starboard side, unfortunately the whole open bay wouldn't fit in with the cockpit. The fuselage has also been doctored for the DMold Intakes.

Image

The Interior of the Intakes have been sprayed up with the compressor faces hopefully getting done tomorrow

Image

and finally for tonight the Cockpit has been closed up and is currently awaiting fitting

Progress is moving along at a snails pace, but at least it's moving :D

The cockpit has been fitted into the fuselage halves which in turn have been joined together, the Gun and open gun bay have also been installed.

Image
Image
Image
Image

The kit moulded fin tip has been chopped off and the replacement one with the DIAS fairing has been fitted. The new tip is thicker than what the old one was so a bit of sanding to reduce it is required.

Image

The Dmold Intakes have been completed and closed up

Image

Will start on filling and sanding the seems around the fuselage over the weekend.

Comments welcome

More progress to report.

With the fuselage together and most of the seams filled and sanded, it was time to put some work in on the wings.

The first thing to do was to remove the various lumps and bumps that are molded on the wings, but don't actually belong to the "E" version. Why Hasegawa don't mold these as separate parts to be added accordingly beats me.

The bits that require removal

Image
Image

After removal a bit of filler required to smooth over the affected areas

Image
Image

Once the filler was smoothed off, it was then time to cut out the areas for the Inboard Slats

Starboard side done

Image

Then it was the Flaps to be cut out

Image

This was repeated for the Port side

And here is the Wing done

Image
Image

Next step will be to insert the resin slats and make up the flaps.
