A glorious baby whistler has been renamed and renumbered as Vulcan558/37558

Just hopes she comes to my neck of the woods at some stage

I've seen this in the flesh and she is indeed a beauty. Of course many rail enthusiasts are up in arms over it's 'pretend' number but for the record it is still officially 37424. Not sure how long it will remain in it's Vulcan ID. I think it's currently based at RVEL in Derby.

Baby Whistler? What's one of them? Never heard them referred to as that as they don't actually whistle. Always heard them referred to as Tractors, Syphons, Growlers or noses.

It's a smaller (type 3) version of the old type 4s (D200s) which are known as whistlers.

IF my memory serves me I think English Electric's 10000 and 10001 sounded much the same as the "Tractors/ Baby Whistlers" though that is too long ago now. Needless to write, those two and Bulleid's 2000hp jobby 10203 should have been preserved.

For anyone interested 37424 (558) is at Norwich and is likely to work passenger trains next week as the 'Greater Anglia short set' duty, the first passenger trains it has worked since March 2000.

37424 is out today and actually worked for the first time on the 19.02 Norwich - Lowestoft on Friday evening, followed by two Yarmouth trips.

forget the model here`s the real thing ,.I hit lucky today at Norwich and did a bit of "bashing "behind 37558 between Norwich and Yarmouth . Vulcan did two trips to Yarmouth and at least one to Lowestoft during daylight hours today backed up by 37405 .

several class 68`s also on show as well

There's at least a third DRS 37 in the "large logo"- 37401. 15th inst I was at Carlisle station when summat was opened up through the train-shed. What a racket; 37401 passed south light engine- thought all the scaffolding inside the station was collapsing. More than a few platform staff made comments about the noise and blue smoke. Fifteen minutes later it was back again more sedately having made rumblings around London Road and Petteril junctions. It was probably a short test run from Kingmoor.
