Mystery light over Sheffield

Post by Sheff » Tue Oct 27, 2009 5:28 pm

Just saw something rather odd - very bright light visible through the clouds - looked suspiciously like something re-entering the atmosphere. 17.20 - heading NE. Anyone else see it?

Not from Brum!

But I did see something very similar down here a couple of weeks back.

It looked like a flare slowly dropping before fizzling out...........

Sounds like space junk or meteorite dropping out of orbit and burning up....or was it.??..

Seen strange lights before, me and a mate saw two silent 'lights' flying over Oxford early this year,,

top stuff. :thumb:

You been on the ale Tim? :P

I've seen satellites passing over before whilst sat in the girlfriends hot tub, but they were deffinately moving.

I thought it may have been the meteorite that was on the news which landed in Latvia, but turns out it was a hoax by Nokia !

Tonight we had a Hercules over which is nothing unusuall here but he deffinatley had a jet up there with him. Only the Hercules had his lights on.

I'm mystified. I'm a bit of a part-time star gazer so I've seen hundreds of satellites (and the space station, shuttle, etc.) so I'm certain it wasn't a satellite. It was obviously very bright to be showing-up through the cloud and it did appear to be burning - it wasn't a steady or tumbling light. It was shifting at the right sort of speed for a satellite which makes me think it was space debris of some sort. I'm just surprised that nobody else has reported seeing it.
