Is there an exercise? Or are these here as a show of force in response to Zapad 2017?

Yes all others have gone, 2 to Ostrava the other 2 to the USA. Ostrava jets should return next week apparently.

Reported earlier in the thread as 61-0020 20th BS

Shame two of them were the same airframes that were here in June and the third is unmarked!

They know how long they're here for, it's just classified not for public dissemination so they're saying they don't know. The USAF doesn't deploy people on open ended timescales - even in combat.

yes and no. yes service personnel pretty much always know how long their going to be away, but airframes may stay and rotate crews, but agree they may have been briefed to treat all as sensitive info....need to know,,,nudge nudge, wink wink....

From posted on the web nobody 'appears' to know how long Zapad '17 is supposed to last. Reports suggest a week but 'could go on longer'

Apologies Cornish but don't think anything happening in the Middle East would be of any relevance here - if (and I emphasise if) anything were to happen here I don't think B-52s would be relevant in this type of theatre (and if they were would probably operate from a different location)

Zapad 2017 is a planned joint strategic military exercise of the armed forces of the Russian Federation and Belarus scheduled for 14—20 September 2017.

It's called posturing and both sides have been doing it for more years than I've been on this earth!
NATO have an exercise, the Russians move some hardware closer to the ex area, then they start manoeuvres and NATO/US moves hardware closer, generally to the UK for large air assets.
And so it goes on. Nothing particularly unusual in it but in this age of instant news/info, every man and his dog now hear about it!

As a footnote, there is a groundswell of opinion that Putin may use this exercise to take over Belarus by stealth by putting in his rumoured 70,000 personnel then either not leaving afterwards or, at the very least, leaving all their heavy fighting equipment behind for a 'rainy day' so to speak. Only time will tell on this!

Official end date is 20th September 2017 - some analysts think longer. Reports confirm Russia should withdraw forces by 30th September. At least Belarus are playing ball and attempting to keep the exercise away from the borders

Maybe I am just old and still a 'child of the Cold War' and don't trust a thing Mr P and his 'team' say
