RAF Church Fenton Help for Heroes Day 4th Sept.

Post by davski » Thu Sep 02, 2010 9:07 am

I'm sure that anyone planning to attend this event will be aware that it is now taking place at Sherburn airfield instead of RAF Church Fenton. Apparently the RAF Falcon's display has been canned but the BBMF Spitfire flypast is still scheduled to take place. Very worthy cause, big shame it's moved venues as setting foot on Fenton's hallowed concrete would have been the star attraction to me!

What`s worst Dave is that they planned it to coincided with the largest BofB show of the year when this could well have been billed as one of this year`s 75th Anniversary events. As current home to 85 Squadron this would have been an ideal event to celebrate this unit`s proud BofB heritage, but I wonder if this was even considered?

Sad it`s been moved, I went to last year`s and it was a lovely day and Fenton has indeed got a nice atmosphere. Even so, if it hadn`t been for the Breighton boys and girls the flightline would have looked a bit poor so let`s hope they can attract a bit more this year.

Hi John and Youth,

I'm told that the Breighton team will be supporting the event again although 2 of their regular display pilots are elsewhere so I don't know how many aircraft will make the hop, there was also talk of a Chinook, Lynx and a Merlin visiting, the Reds were provisionally earmarked for a flypast but there's nothing published in their weekend schedule on the website, Spitfire flypast was confirmed a while ago, the Fenton JP has been buzzing about today so fingers crossed for an appearance from them.

John, can't comment on the BoB celebration possibilities without getting wound up! They'd almost certainly have needed help from Linton and my guess is that they just wouldn't have got that - I mean, Linton had the airspace restricted a month or so ago while the two camo'd Tucano's and a Spitfire orbited in formation for 10 minutes over Stillingfleet before flying over York racecourse, did no one think that the wannabe pilots confined to the ground at Fenton for half an hour would have loved to have seen and been inspired by a sight like that? Instead they watched them flying round in circles 6 miles away in the middle of nowhere! It's enough to make you weep!!

Hi Youth,
Shame about the lack of military aircraft, I managed to see the Spitfire from the spoil heap just east of the airfield, saw the T-4 JP arrive back at Fenton earlier which would make it XR673/G-BXLO, oddly enough it was the Mk 5 flying on Friday XW355/G-JPTV (currently painted as XW354)...

I saw the Spit over Howden about 15.15. Lovely sound made even better by the fact it drowned out the sound of the gf complaining about something hair related :D
Was it just a flypast at Sherburn ? it seemed to come back in next to no time.
